WebAuth Protocol to be Enabled on EOS Mainnet

Block. One released support for the WebAuthn Protocol, which will enable seamless and more secure blokcchain transaction signing, including over TouchID. An MSIG has already been approved by 15+ Block Producers for deployment on the EOS mainnet.

WebAuthn is a widely accepted secure authentication standard that enables transaction signing without browser extensions or additional software. With this EOSIO users will be able to sign transactions directly with WebAuthn, allowing a level of security for private keys still unseen in any blockchain.

WebAuthn support was already announced at B1 June back in 2019. Through WebAuthn it is possible to sign transactions within EOSIO chains via hardware devices such as the YubiKeys or via built-in sensors such as the TouchID. This way it will no longer be mandatory for users to use their private keys, and there will be no more risk of losing the account completely because of a missing private key.

"Support for WebAuthn in EOSIO is a step towards more secure and seamless authentication in blockchain applications. We encourage application developers to join the first wave of early adopters testing the applications of this technology for blockchain platforms and we will continue to investigate mechanisms to support startup and enterprise grade applications of this innovative technology."
